Becoming a licensed provider is the first step toward professionalism.  With 600 or more licensed providers in Monterey County, parents do not necessarily need to place their child in YOUR home.  To be successful, you must create an atmosphere where the parent wants to place their child in your home and keep him there.  Below are various resources you may find helpful.

MCFCCA also has a Provider Support Hotline.  If you need information, help, or just have a question, please contact us.

Insurance

The state of California requires all licensed family child care providers to have one of the following:

bullet

liability insurance covering bodily injury to clients and guests caused by the negligence of the provider or assistant in the amount of $300,000, or

bullet

a bond in the amount of $300,00, or

bullet

a file of affidavits signed by each parent with a child enrolled in the home.  The affidavit is only a statement stating that the parent is aware of the fact that your child care business does not carry liability insurance or a bond.

The licensing staff will review the affidavits or verifying proof of insurance or bond at the renewal visits.

Food Programs

When you join one of these programs, you are reimbursed for some of the meals you serve the children in your child care.  There are menu guidelines you must follow as well as food groups and quantities that need to be served at each meal.  You will need to keep attendance records of all your child care children and fill in the menus for the whole month with they forms that the food program supplies.  Both programs have the same amount of reimbursement and all need the same information from you:  they differ only in the quantity of paperwork required and a few other minor details.

Preschool Programs

Some providers develop their preschool program and many others order a preschool program to use with their children.  The programs below are basically similar and include art, crafts, educational concepts, music, stories, learning games, parent letters, etc.  The "lesson" plans are all spelled out for you and all the supplies needed for the various projects are usually included in the package you purchase (except for paint, crayolas, glue, tape, etc).  However, be sure to check out each program since there is a difference in what each program offers in their package.

Professional Member Organizations

The "Families and Work Institute" conducted a study on the quality of care children received in Family Child Care Homes.  They concluded, from the statistics of their 2-year study, that there were only about 13% of homes who provided quality care.  Those who provided quality care:

bullet

Went into their child care business because they wanted to, not because a relative or friend asked them to watch their child as a favor,

bullet

Became licensed, registered, or whatever their particular state required,

bullet

Went to and continued to attend classes and courses to continue their education in the child care field, and

bullet

joined a professional peer organization.

Below are a few organizations that can keep you up to date on current issues, provide educational opportunities, provide support and networking resources, and much more.
